The Importance of an Authentic Teacher

A skilled teacher is essential in Vajrayana Buddhism. Any accelerated course of learning would require a highly competent guide, but it is even more important when working with the mind. Buddhist teaching is both simple and subtly complex, and one's inner experience during meditation must be guided carefully.

A passage from the introduction to 'Life of Milarepa', by Lobsang P. Lhalungpa summarizes it well:

"The fulfillment of a seeker's higher aspirations is not so much dependent on accumulating knowledge as on overcoming mental obstacles and gaining insight into the truth in oneself. For this, the guidance of an experienced teacher is a practical necessity. The role of teacher in an esoteric path of self-transformation through meditation and action, such as Vajrayana, is even more important. The success of Dharma practice differs markedly from individual to individual. Each responds differently. Even the effectiveness of initiation depends on the presence or absence of appropriate conditions."

To progress rapidly while building self-confidence therefore requires an accomplished practitioner and teacher. Dharmakaya offers students the skills of some of the principal minds in the Kagyu school.

His Eminence the Fourth Trungram Gyaltrul Rinpoche is the founder and spiritual director of Dharmakaya and the United Trungram Buddhist Fellowship (UTBF).

As one of the most prominent incarnate lamas of Tibet, Rinpoche is the lineage holder of many Buddhist teachings and practices, among which the most unique are those of the Trungram Tradition - a special meditation lineage of the Kagyu School of Vajrayana Buddhism. Among the highly realized masters, scholars and ordinary people of Tibet, Trungram Gyaltrul Rinpoche is recognized as an emanation of Milarepa, one of the most important, fully enlightened founders of the Kagyu lineage from the 12th century.

Rinpoche was born in India to a Nepalese Sherpa family in 1968. When eighteen months old, he was recognized by H.H. the 16th Karmapa as the reincarnation of the Third Trungram Gyaltrul Rinpoche - a legendary Buddhist master considered as one of the greatest teachers in the twentieth century.

Rinpoche is multi-lingual and teaches in Europe, Asia and the U.S. He is based in Boston, MA where he has graduated from a PhD program at Harvard University in Indo-Tibetan Buddhsm with focus on comparative studies. In addition to his work throughout Asia, leading UTBF, Rinpoche applies his energies to the creation of new teaching and meditation centers in the U.S. under the Dharmakaya affiliate.

Venerable Khenchen Trinley Paljor Rinpoche is one of the chief lineage holders of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Khenchen means Great Khenpo (teacher) of the lineage. Khenchen Rinpoche is a main teacher of Dharmakaya and UTBF.

Khenchen Rinpoche was Trugram Gyaltrul Rinpoche's personal tutor. His training includes a transmission of the complete Karma Kagyu teachings from the 16th Karmapa in addition to main teachings from the Sakyapa school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Khenchen Rinpoche is a retreat master (Druponla). The three year-three month-and three day retreat is a traditional practice in Buddhism which leads to rapid advancement. Khenchen Rinpoche accomplished this retreat on three separate occasions and, at the request of Trungram Gyaltrul Rinpoche, he will be passing on his knowledge of this unique practice to students in the U.S. at the retreat center in New York State.
